A famous quote attributed to Dietrich Bonhoeffer says, “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.” As a Christian, Bonhoeffer could not idly sit by while evil ran rampant in Germany with the Nazi regime slaughtering the Jews. Today, there is another category of humans being slaughtered, but this time there is no world war being fought to defend them, and many people go day to day without giving any thought to their destruction. A group of people living in what should be the safest location in the world now find themselves in the most dangerous location: the womb.

Abortion is a subject of great tension in our nation, and rightfully so. The Bible describes humans, from the point of their unique existence at fertilization onward, as being created in the image of God, and therefore having equal value and worth to every other human. However, many have been corrupted by a naturalistic, progressive worldview that seeks to devalue and dehumanize the unborn in order to justify eliminating them through abortion. Last year, 11,580 abortions were voluntarily reported in Colorado, up 17% from the previous year. This means, at minimum, 11,580 babies were denied life in Colorado in 2021, which is nearly four times the number of lives that were lost in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Colorado is famous in the nation for its abortion laws, with buses transporting people from other states to Colorado for the simple yet heart breaking purpose of destroying a baby – yes baby – in the womb. Colorado allows for babies in the womb to be killed at any point and for any reason, including those who could be delivered alive without any medical complications at the moment the abortion takes place.

One of the most famous late-term abortion providers in the US is Dr. LeRoy Carhart. Carhart has performed countless late-term abortions in the United States and has fought for abortion rights at the Supreme Court on multiple occasions. Dr. Carhart has made his mission one of equipping and training other doctors to destroy babies in the womb through abortion.

He says, “I decided to make the practice of abortion, training of physicians to become abortion providers, and increasing the availability of safe and legal abortions to a greater number of women, my goals for the remainder of my professional life.” He further states, “I think the only thing I can do….is just train as many doctors as I can to go out on their own and provide abortions and get enough people providing them…. That makes [the anti-abortion activist’s] job 10 times harder because there are now 10 times more of us.”

Dr. Carhart is now working to open a clinic in Pueblo, Colorado (1930 E. Orman) where his clinic will provide abortion services to women in Pueblo and the surrounding communities. Pueblo has not had an abortion facility since Planned Parenthood closed its doors in 2015.

The time has come for the community of Pueblo to once again take a stand against the evil of abortion, which denies life to babies in the womb and hurts women and families for years to come. The Christian community cannot remain silent or inactive. We cannot turn a blind eye to the evil knocking at the door. We must act, we must take a stand against evil, and we must follow the Word of God when it says, “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Proverbs 31:8-9). God tells us repeatedly that children belong to Him and that He loves them dearly. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them” (Matthew 19:14). In the Old Testament, God speaks of the children being sacrificed to false gods as His own children. In Ezekiel 16:20-21, God says, “And you took your sons and your daughters, whom you had borne to me, and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured.” God sees babies as belonging to Him and He loves them dearly, which is why He tells us to “Look after orphans” (James 1:27), “Defend the weak and fatherless” (Psalm 82:3), and “bring justice to the fatherless” (Isaiah 1:17).
